What are Discord Gateway intents?
Intents tell Discord which categories of Gateway data your bot requests. Select the categories used by your bot's features, then copy the combined integer or client initialization code. Requesting fewer unnecessary categories can reduce the events and data your application handles.
The calculator combines intent bits using BigInt arithmetic. For example, Guilds and Guild Messages combine to 513. Use the decoder to inspect an existing number. Unrecognized bits are preserved in the integer, but code generation is disabled until you clear them or choose a preset.
Privileged intents need more than a code change
Guild Members, Guild Presences, and Message Content are privileged. Enable the required switches under your application's Bot settings in the Discord Developer Portal. Depending on the application's verification and access status, Discord approval may also be required. This calculator does not enable or approve intents for your application.
Requesting unavailable privileged intents can close the Gateway connection with code 4014. Invalid intent flags can cause code 4013. Check your code configuration and Developer Portal settings when diagnosing a connection failure.
Message events are different from message content
Guild Messages subscribes to server message events. Message Content affects access to content-related fields, subject to Discord's exceptions. A traditional prefix-command bot often needs both. Message Content alone does not subscribe the bot to every message event.
Intents, permissions, and library caches
Intents do not replace server permissions or channel access. Use the permissions and invite generator for those settings. Some libraries also need cache or partial-object configuration to handle uncached direct messages or reactions; this tool generates intent selection, not those additional policies.
The slash-command preset uses Guilds as a simple starting point for a server bot connected to the Gateway. It does not register commands. An application handling interactions entirely over HTTP does not need a Gateway connection just to receive those interactions.
Frequently asked questions
Which intent should I use for a welcome bot?
The welcome preset selects Guilds and Guild Members. Enable the privileged member intent in the Developer Portal and add a member-join handler in your code.
Does a prefix-command bot need Message Content?
For ordinary server messages that the bot reads to detect a text prefix, it generally does. Select the relevant message-event intents too and check Discord's documented exceptions.
Will Administrator enable every intent?
No. Administrator is a server permission. Gateway intent selection and privileged-intent access are configured separately.
Why are some bits missing from the list?
Intent bits are not a continuous sequence. Only documented flags are listed. Do not fill the gaps with invented values.
Do I need to enter a bot token here?
No. Calculation and code generation happen locally in your browser. The generated code reads the token from an environment variable when you run it yourself.
